Abstract

According to the Unites States Census Bureau, traffic accidents continue to exceed 10 million accidents per year. These accidents result in at least 30 thousand fatalities per year and many billions of dollars in loss in both human productivity and material. Causes of traffic accidents may be attributed to human error, highway congestion, or poor weather and road conditions. To reduce traffic accidents and physical injury to passengers, development of different vehicle control systems to improve safety have been under consideration. Advanced sensors that can alert the drivers to potential hazards on the road (which are the root cause of most accidents), such as stopped vehicles and slippery surfaces, can drastically improve traffic safety. Millimeter-wave (MMW) radar sensors with beam scanning capability and fine angular resolution are among the different sensors proposed for automotive related applications.
